Jesus was not liked by those in power and that distaste is on display when Jesus is asked about taxes. Why, because their darkness is exposed by his light. He threatened their power, their wealth, and their prestige. The question on taxes was their way of putting Jesus into a no-win situation, and He wins. In winning this argument, Jesus challenges not just the Pharisees, but us, with the question - what belongs the government and what belongs to God?
