September Mission Project
Evelyn's Garden received a $2500 grant from Indian Nations Presbytery, which is being used to develop a tranquil spot near the garden, complete with bench, pathway, and flowering plants. The grant has also been used to develop a lower fence that keeps rabbits away from our vegetables, to erect a pad for and purchase of a storage water tank which will improve the irrigation system to the garden as well as to the church. A dedication sign is also being purchased.
In October, we will have a Dedication Ceremony for the garden, honoring Evelyn Ziegelgruber, a beloved Santa Fe member who passed away in 2009. We are asking members to help us with the purchase of knock-out rose bushes, similar to the bushes that have provided much color to our landscaping for most of this summer. These rose bushes will be planted around the bench and portions of the fence line of the garden.
Please visit the Mission bulletin board in September, to view our plans and to pledge a donated knock-out rose bush to the landscaping plans.
The picture above shows school principal Mr. Roper, teacher Jackie Wall and Rev. Miller on the day that members of Santa Fe delivered a busload of school supplies to Wellston Elementary School. The items were donated by the Vacation Bible School children and members of the church during the “Stuff the Bus” campaign
Urban Missions Report
Urban Missions is wrapping up their School Supply program. As of August 18, they provided school supplies to 1059 school-aged kids, and they still have one week left in their program! The funds for this program come largely from the In As Much Foundation, but Urban Missions also depends upon individual donations.
Urban Missions has also been involved in a new program through the Regional Food Bank, called the Family Food Box. Since July 17, 2010, Urban Missions has partnered with the Regional Food Bank and the Dept of Human Services to implement this program. Over 1200 children and parents have benefited from this program. Children receive two boxes each, which provides enough food for two weeks. During these recessionary times, there are many families who are struggling to provide adequate dietary needs for their children, and thus this program has been in high demand. Urban Missions was selected as one of the sites for the Family Food Box because they offer one of the city's largest food pantries.
